Kumble is fine, says surgeon

BANGALORE May 16. Anil Kumble successfully underwent a surgery on his broken lower jaw at a private nursing home here on Thursday morning. The surgery lasted 45 minutes. Dr. Kishore Nayak, who headed the surgery team, said, "Anil is fine. He should be ready for practice work in a week's time."

"We inserted two titanium plates to hold the jaw. It was a mobile fracture and we have stabilised it. Anil will be discharged tomorrow,'' said Dr. Sanjiv Nair, a member of the team that operated on Kumble.

It may be recalled that Kumble returned home after a Mervyn Dillon delivery hit his lower jaw in the fourth Test at St. John's, Antigua. Kumble had subsequently bowled 14 overs and got the prize-wicket of Brian Lara, despite being in considerable pain.

"Anil should be ready for international cricket within 10 to 15 days. Recently we performed a similar surgery on S. Sriram, who is now part of the India `A' team touring Sri Lanka," added Dr. Nayak. — Our Sports Reporter
