SP cracks down on factionalists

By Our Staff Reporter

GUNTUR MAY 16. Factionalists and rowdy elements in the district are on the receiving end. Most of them are either spending sleepless nights or leaving the district for `safety cover', thanks to the continuous `warning exercise' embarked on by the Superintendent of Police, P.S.R. Anjaneyulu.

Ever since he took over the reins of the police department in the district, Mr. Anjaneyulu is not giving any `let up' in his mission of dissuading habitual offenders from indulging in anti-social activities.

As part of the task, Mr. Anjaneyulu called as many as 283 persons belonging to Gurazala police sub-division and warned them of dire consequences if they indulged in any violent activity. Believing that the chronology should be in a descending order, he first called the Telugu Desam Party leader, Joolakanti Brahma Reddy, and the Congress leader, Pinnelli Lakshma Reddy of Macherla. The factions working under the two leaders were accused in several murder cases, including the dastardly killing of seven persons travelling in a jeep near Atmakurubodu under Durgi police station limits on March 10, 2001.

Mincing no words in his warnings, the SP told them in no uncertain terms that they could not pursue their factional activity. "There should be no report of any manufacturing or explosion of a bomb from your area. If any complaint is received or any incident occurs, both of you will be held squarely responsible for it. And, the punishment will be severe,'' he told them. Going one step ahead, he warned Brahma Reddy that he could not harp on violent politics, just because his mother was a member of the State Legislative Assembly. He asked Brahma Reddy if it was true that he was taking the gunmen, provided to his mother, along with him. "If it is repeated, you will be behind the bars for violating the law,'' he told him.

He also warned Siva Reddy and Chandra Reddy of Kambhampadu village. The SP told the factionalists of Daida and Telukutla villages that they could not do anything and get away with it any longer.

With an intention of sending the message across the people in a firm manner, the SP had the media (both print and electronic) with him while he was undertaking this exercise.

Mr. Anjaneyulu wanted villagers to ostracize anybody who was making, carrying or storing bombs and other lethal weapons. He got over 100 rowdy-sheeters from Piduguralla area and gave them serious warnings.

Most of those who had past history of being accused in several criminal cases within Guntur city were already warned.
