The gales began after 10 p.m. and lasted for nearly two hours. According to information reaching here, banana plantations suffered heavy damage in Srikakulam rural, Polaki, Narsannapeta, and Gara mandals. In the rural mandal, the plantations in Arasavalli, Killipalem, Kallepalli, Bairi and Karajada were badly affected. Mango orchards also suffered damage, it was learnt. The details of loss were yet to be ascertained. The town had gone without power for more than two hours. However, the wind and showers provided a welcome relief from the scorching heatwave conditions that prevailed in the district.
Lightning kills one
M. Hemaraju (23) of Batti Galluru in Sompeta mandal of the district died when lightning struck him on Wednesday night. He was standing outside his hut near the seashore when the incident occurred, according to the Sompeta police. Another person sustained injuries.
