Musharraf admits irregularities in referendum

Islamabad May 16. The Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, has admitted irregularities in the referendum held to extend his stay in office by five years, but said they were done without his orders.

``Although, I do admit that there might be some truth behind the reports of irregularities in the Presidential referendum but even if they had not been done, I might have won the election with a thumping majority,'' he said.

``My inner self is quite satisfied over the outcome of the referendum as I had not ordered such irregularities to be committed,'' Gen. Musharraf said, bringing up the matter even though it was not listed on the agenda of the Cabinet meeting yesterday. Trying to play down the largescale irregularities, widely reported in national and international media, the military ruler justified the referendum, saying it was to continue his reform programmes, The News daily reported. — PTI
