Ooty gripped by flower show fever

By D. Radhakrishnan

Udhagamandalam May16. With just a day left for the curtains to go up on the two-day 1 06th Annual Floral Carnival at the Government Botanical Gardens (GBG) here, the town and its surroundings are gripped by the flower show fever. The venue is a beehive of activity and exhibitors' stalls, which for the first time canopy type, numbering 23 have been put up.

Stating that arrangements are in place for holding the show , the Joint Director of Horticulture, K.Shanmugham, told The Hindu here today one of the show highlights is that the entire horticultural wealth of Tamil Nadu would be on display in one place.

Mangoes from Salem, cut flowers from Dharmapuri, cashew nuts from Cuddalore, bananas from Tiruchy and spices from Kanyakumari would be on display. The latest achievement of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) would also be showcased.

In addition to the elaborately decorated `trophy'' near the threshold of the GBG — one of the main attractions during the recent flower shows — there would be sections for ikebana flower arrangements and bonsai. While flowers grown by institutions and associations such as the Raj Bhavan, the Good Shepherd International School and the Nilgiris Flower Growers Association would vie with each other to catch the visitors' eye at the cut flowers section, there would also be a medicinal plants exhibition. The Nilgiris Collector Supriya Sahu said no effort would be spared in making the show a memorable one.

The GBG is looking resplendent with dahlias, several varieties of petunias and marigold. Though there has been intermittent rain here, organisers are hoping that it will not play spoilsport.

Authorities have made elaborate traffic arrangements.

With VVIPs such as the President and the Tamil Nadu Governor camping here, security has been accorded top priority.

The whole town is swarming with police personnel.

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation has made arrangements to ply adequate number of special buses round the clock between Coimbatore and Udhagamandalam.
