KC(M) rally tomorrow

By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA MAY 16. The Kerala Congress(M) district secretary, Mammen Mathai, MLA, has said that not less than 25,000 party workers and supporters would participate in the KC(M) district rally to be held in Pathanamthitta on May 18 afternoon.

At a press conference here today, he said that the Revenue Minister, K. M. Mani, will inaugurate the rally and the Rural Development Minister, C. F. Thomas, will deliver the keynote address.

He said that strict action should be taken against those who were found engaged in the illegal quarrying and transportation of river sand.

The MLA favoured imposition of heavy penalties as prescribed in the River Protection Act. In Thiruvalla, the Revenue officials were vigilant against the illegal river sand extraction by imposing a fine of Rs. 25,000 per lorry load of illegally mined sand, he added.

Mr. Mathai alleged that the Forest Department has taken a casual approach towards the smuggling of sandalwood from the very premises of the Forest offices at Ranni and Konni. He said that the Legislative Committee would inspect the Konni and Ranni forest offices from where the sandal trees were cut and smuggled recently.

The KC(M) district general secretaries, Varghese Mammen, Varghese Karikkalan and vice-president, Babu Varghese, also attended the meet.
