Thousands pay homage to slain jawan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM May 16. The body of Gunner Ratheesh of 38 Rashtriya Rifles who laid down his life in Jammu on May 14 was brought to Thiruvananthapuram today morning. The body was received with full honours at the Sanghumkhom air base.

The Cultural Affairs Minister, G. Karthikeyan, laid a wreath on behalf of the Chief Minister. Wreaths were laid by Colonel BLT Joseph on behalf of the Southern Command Army Chief and Wing Commander Yogesh Jain for the AOC- in- C, Southern Air Command.

The MLAs, Mangode Radhakrishnan and Thomas Isaac, and the District Collector, Jyothilal, also offered floral tributes.

The slain jawan's father, Sasidharan Nair, other relatives and a large number of mourners from Aryanad, his native village, were present at the air base.

Later, the body was taken to Aryanad in a funeral procession which included several vehicles. The body was placed at the Aryanad panchayat community hall and the Meenagal tribal high school for the public to pay homage before the cremation.

Gunner Ratheesh was killed when his team was on patrol duty.

He is survived by his parents and a sister.
