Among those who scaled the 8,848-meter (29,028-foot) peak were a cancer survivor and Tashi Tenzing, the grandson of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, who 49 years ago, joined New Zealander Edmund Hillary in becoming the first climbers to reach the top of the Everest. Hillary's grandson, Peter, was also scaling the Mount Everest and was expected to reach the summit later today or tomorrow. Edmund Hillary achieved his feat on May 29, 1953. The 55 mountaineers, who come from a number of expeditions, reached the top of the Everest via its south route after a week of bad weather cleared up, said Mahadev Sharma, who helped organise the climb. Also conquering Everest was 27-year-old Sean Swarner from Colorado, U.S., who climbed the world's largest mountain with two sherpa guides after surviving a bout of lung cancer. A Nepalese woman, Pemba Dolma, was also among the successful climbers. AFP
