A much-awaited breather for players

By Arvind Aaron

CHENNAI May 19. The under-14 section in boys and girls are being closely fought while tremendous fighting spirit persists in the under-12 sections after six rounds of the Ramco National under-12 and 14 boys' and girls chess championships being played here at the SBOA school. After completing six rounds in four days, the 543 players get a much-awaited breather in the form of a rest day on Sunday. Five rounds remain to be played in this event which will conclude on May 23.

Two players, Abhijeet Gupta from Rajasthan and G. Rohit from Andhra Pradesh are leading the boys under-14 section with 5.5 points from six games and are meeting in an important round seven game on Monday. The girls under-14 section has a bunch of five girls. In all sections, none of the leaders are either top seed or defending champions giving way for surprising results so far.

In the under-12 boys' section, top seed Tejdeep has lost 1.5 points already and in the girls' section, Sindhu is bouncing back after losing one point so far from two draws. Defending under 12 champion Vijay Keerthi, who has lost one point so far is playing very well despite an accident which cost him a rook in round five.

In the boys' under-14 and girls' under-14 sections, top seed Deep Sen Gupta and Anoori Shah have lost 1.5 points already and have a tough agenda to claw back to the top.
