Support Vajpayee in the hour of crisis: Gowda

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE MAY 20. The former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, has asked the people to stand as one in the wake of the crisis emerging out of the situation on the border.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, he said there should be no politicisation of the issue of terrorism and there should not be any irresponsible statements about what the Government should do.

Mr. Gowda said the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, had taken the right decision in discussing the matter with the Opposition leaders. He said this was a situation when the Prime Minister should be given all the support he needed to take the right decision, as the matter was not an ordinary one.

Asked how the National Democratic Alliance Government was handling the situation, Mr. Gowda said it was not a time to take stock of the Government's omissions and commissions. ``At least, I shall not shirk from my responsibility of giving support to the Government,'' he added.

On the situation in Gujarat, Mr. Gowda said it had sent a wrong signal to the world and added that it was better sometimes if the State governments were not pro-active in dealing with communal sentiments.

About the anti-incumbency mood that was purportedly gaining momentum against the NDA Government at the Centre, he said the BJP had lost 24 of the 28 byelections held in the last three years. The BJP's allies in the NDA also had lost badly. The time was ripe for the emergence of the "Third Front."
