New scheme for salaried taxpayers

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI MAY 20. In a bid to reduce the direct interface between the Income Tax Department and the taxpayer, the Union Finance Ministry has launched a new scheme— Suvidha— for salaried taxpayers. To begin with, this scheme will be operational in the four metropolitan cities as well as in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Baroda, Bhopal, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Pune and Thane.

Aimed at organisations, which have bulk filers of income tax, the scheme covers employers who have a minimum of 50 employees and will also include Drawing and Disbursement Officers in the case of Central Government, State Governments and public sector units.

The scheme is optional, under which the employees can furnish their returns of income tax to the employers who in turn would transcribe that data of such returns on a computer readable medium using a software to be made available by the Income Tax Department. The bulk returns will be processed on a priority basis and the intimation under Section 143(1), demand notices, refunds, etc. would be served on the employers.

The draft scheme is available on www.finmin.nic.in and the Ministry is looking for comments about it.
