CPI (ML) wants Govt. to de-escalate tensions

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI MAY 20. The CPI (ML) today expressed serious concern over the increasing tension between India and Pakistan and asked the Government to take urgent steps to ``de-escalate''.

In a statement here, the party general secretary, Dipankar Bhattacharya, said all efforts should be made to bring Pakistan to the negotiating table and settle matters through peaceful means.

Taking strong exception to the Vajpayee Government's policy of diplomatic disengagement with Pakistan, he said, the step would result in a greater American intervention in the region and a loss of initiative for India.

Meanwhile, former JD (U) general secretary, Mohan Prakash, said in tackling the current situation the Government neither had ``the initiative nor direction''.

He told presspersons that at a time when ``some elements in the Sangh Parivar repeatedly challenged the authority of the Prime Minister and the Supreme Court'', ``how can the Vajpayee Government garner inner strength to fight terrorism''.

He said the Prime Minister had been discussing both the security situation and Presidential polls with leaders of Opposition simultaneously instead of paying special attention to a grave issue like Indo-Pak. relations.
