``Every hasty step would play into the hands of the terrorists,'' the Foreign Minister, Joschka Fischer, said, according to a German embassy press release. Voicing ``deep alarm'' over the armed encounters along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, Mr. Fischer said ``the armies of two nuclear armed states are facing each other in a dangerous situation''
`Exercise restraint'
Britain today said it had asked India to exercise restraint and enter into a dialogue with Pakistan to resolve the crisis. Asked to comment on reports that the U.K. had warned India against any ``Israel-type'' strikes, an official spokesman of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: ``We have encouraged India to exercise restraint and to enter into dialogue with Pakistan. I don't know from where that (warning India against any Israel-type strikes) came from.'' He said there was no change in Britain's position.
Annan's counsel
Expressing concern over tension between India and Pakistan, the U.N. Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, today urged both sides to ``exercise maximum restraint to avert further escalation'' of the situation.
Israel's call
Asserting that there was no immunity from terrorism, Israel had said it hopes India would deal with the situation in the wake of the recent attack in Jammu wit h the ``highest degree of wisdom''. ``There is no immunity from terrorism. If terrorism succeeds in achieving political gain in one part of the world, it will raise its head in other parts'', the Israeli President, Moshe Katsav, said at a function marking the 10th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
