Letters to the Editor
Sir, This has reference to your Editorial on the plight of the mentally ill in India. (May 13). The Erwadi tragedy had kindled public response to the care of the mentally ill. The Supreme Court intervention for the upgrading of care for the mentally ill needs to be applauded. But then, a lot remains to be done in terms of stigma, under-utilisation of existing services, rehabilitation of the recovered and recovering patients and establishment of an organisation for the rights of patients. The education of this target group needs to be emphasised. Quality of care, dignity of the sick, liable alternatives to hospitalisation and the involvement of more NGOs in mental health care delivery, including family groups, should be encouraged. G. Gopalakrishnan, Tiruchi, T.N.
