Crop diversification efforts bear fruit

Chandigarh May 21. The Haryana Government says its efforts to diversify crops have borne fruit as there has been tremendous increase in both area as well as production of vegetables in the State.

The area under vegetables has gone upto 1.5 lakh hectares and its production upto 20.20 lakh tonne during 2001-2002 rabi as compared to 55,360 hectaers and six lakh tonne respectively during 1990-1991, Agriculture Minister Jaswinder Singh Sandhu said here today.

Sandhu said that the vegetable production target for rabi 2002-2003 had been fixed at 22.5 lakh tonne.

He said that quality seeds of various vegetables produced at Government gardens and nurseries under Seed Production Programme would be made available to the farmers at reasonable rates besides encouraging farmers to grow hybrid vegetables for better yield.

He said that during the current year, hybrid seeds of tomato, lady finger, brinjal, pepper, gourd for sowing over an area of 7224 hectares were distributed among farmers at 25 per cent subsidy besides 1200 mini-kits of hybrid seeds.

Sandhu said that mushroom was another crop that had been engaging the attention of the farmers for the last many years. ``More and more farmers were adopting mushroom culture thanks to the training imparted by the Agriculture Department to the farmers under mushroom production programme'', he said.

He said that the mushroom production had increased upto 4500 tonne during 2001-2002 from 850 tonne during 1990-91. -- PTI
