Dalit burnt in fire allegedly set by villagers

Kanpur May 21. A mentally challenged Dalit was burnt alive when an agitated mob, angry over his assault on an old man, allegedly set his house afire in Mansura village of adjoining Kanpur Dehat district yesterday.

A police spokesman said here today that the deceased, Rampal Raidas, made an unprovoked attack using a spike on a retired state government official, Sundar Lal, and then fled.

A group of villagers immediately chased Rampal till his house where he reportedly locked himself. The agitated villagers then set his house afire.

Rampal sustained serious burn injuries and succumbed on way to the hospital.

Sundar Lal had to be admitted to UHM Hospital here in a serious condition.

The fire reduced to ashes the domestic belongings of Rampal and those in the two adjoining houses of his brothers.

His brother has lodged an FIR against the villagers while Sundar Lal's family has in turn filed a case against the deceased.

Meanwhile, the villagers claimed that Rampal himself had set his house on fire. -- UNI
