Murder inside restaurant

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI MAY 21. A 27-year-old supervisor of the Preet Vihar branch of the Sagar Ratna chain of restaurants was found murdered inside the restaurant in East Delhi yesterday. The involvment of an insider is suspected in the case.

The deceased, Venkatesh, had been working in the restaurant for the past seven years. The police said his body was discovered at around 7 a.m. by the restaurant cashier who went to Venkatesh's room to collect the money supposed to be deposited in the bank.

The cashier told the police that the days' earning of the restaurant used to be with Venkatesh, who kept it in a safe case in his room.

The next day, the cashier would deposit the money in the bank. However on Sunday he could not deposit the money as the bank was closed.

This morning when the cashier went to Venkatesh's room to get the money, he saw Venkatesh lying on the floor near the bed. His throat had been slit and some other stab injuries all over the body. The Rs. 60,000 kept in the safe case was found missing. The police said initial investigations pointed to the involvement of someone who had specific information about the money and the place where it was kept. The entry to the room was friendly and there were no prominent signs of struggle. Hence, police are investigating the insider theory in the case.

During questioning, some restaurant employees claimed that only Venkatesh used to live in the rear portion of the hotel during night, whereas the others used to sleep in the room allotted to them.

Meanwhile, the investigations suffered a set-back when police found that the restaurant management had not got the identities of their temporary employees verified by the local police. The Preet Vihar police is, therefore, trying to collect the details of such employees to confirm whether anyone of them was missing or not. There are around 100 staff in the restaurant who work in shifts.

A case of robbery-cum-murder has been registered at the Preet Vihar police station and further investigations are on.
