Sandeep Patil to be VMICC's coach

By Our Special Correspondent

MUMBAI May 21. Former India manager and current Kenya coach Sandeep Patil, has been appointed coach of the proposed Vinoo Mankad Indoor Cricket Centre (VMICC), Mumbai's first such facility, expected to become functional by 2002 end, and having five pitches, three for pace bowling and two for spin.

According to Mr Rajsingh Dungarpur, the synthetic surface is the most cricket aspect of an indoor centre and so the wicket laying will be done under the supervision of Mr Bob Simpson, the ex-Australian skipper and manager.

The governing council of the VMICC includes four former India captains (Polly Umrigar, Nari Contractor, M.A.K. Pataudi and Bishen Bedi), four former Board presidents (N.K.P. Salve, I.S. Bindra, Rajsingh Dungarpur and Dr. A.C. Muthiah), apart from Mayank Khandwala and Kamal Morarka.

Except Mr Pataudi and Dr. Muthiah, the others were present at today's meeting here. Special invitees to the meeting were industrialists Parvez Damania, Vikas Kasliwal, besides Simpson, coach Patil and ex-Ranji opener Shishir Hattangadi.

The VMICC, being set up as a division of Landmarc Leisure Corporation Limited, and located at Worli, has signed an MOU making the CCI as the founder patron.

The cricket equipment will be imported from Germany and Canada, according to Mr Dungarpur, who said the decision to invite Mr Simpson to oversee wicket lying had been taken in view of his expertise in this matter.

The ex-Aussie coach is involved with a company producing and marketing synthetic surfaces in different disciplines.
