Rohit consolidates position

By Arvind Aaron

Chennai May 21. G. Rohit of Champions Academy, Andhra Pradesh, stretched his lead to a full point after a comfortable round nine victory in the boys under-14 section of the 15th Ramco National under-12 and 14 boys and girls chess championships being played here at the SBOA School on Tuesday.

Rohit won a 39-move Rossolimo attack game with the white pieces against Vipal Subhashi of Bihar to tally eight points from nine games. Two rounds remain to be played in this Rs.1 lakh prize money event organised by the Capa Chess Academy.

In a well-contested section, a one-point lead looks large. Six players are in the second spot with seven points and they include S. Arun Prasad (TN), Purushothaman (CHMP), Akshay Raj Kore (MASC), Sriram Sarja (Kar), Deep Sen Gupta (AICF), Ninad Vijay Puranik (Mah).

Rohit needs a win or two draws to win the title and book a seat in the Indian contingent to Greece this November. A defeat could open up the section.

Kesavananda Krishna trains G. Rohit of Guntur, sponsored by Hero Honda. The leader board remained unchanged in the boys under-12 section with fighting draws recorded in the top four tables. This section is heading for a photo finish with defending champion Vijay Keerthi (Kar), C.R.G. Krishna (AP) and Subodh Lakhey (Mah) running neck and neck with 7.5 points.

Eight players are in the second spot with seven points and it includes the talented nine-year-old Delhi player Parimarjan Negi who won with the white pieces on Tuesday.

Mary Ann Gomes of Goodricke National Academy scored a clinical win over T. Vennela of Champions Academy with the black pieces after winning white's queen with a knight check to move up the table to seven points.

In the same girls under 14 section Kiran Monisha Mohanty of Orissa prevailed over Mugdha Variyar of Maharashtra to join Gomes in the second spot with seven points. Leader, Saheli Nath (7.5 points) of West Bengal was held to a draw by Tamil Nadu's talent, Ishwarya Shobana in a pawn ending and as a result got her lead trimmed to half a point.

In the girls under 12 section, Mitali Patil of Maharashtra put the brakes on Ramya Krishna's winning rhythm by holding her to a draw in a marathon opposite colour bishop ending. Getting a fortress in a dead drawn ending, Mitali claimed a draw with arbiter B. Sakthi Prabhakar of Chennai before which Ramya Krishna herself agreed to it.

Ramya Krishna is on 8.5 points after this result while Praneetha, her state mate is close on her heels with eight points. Three players are in third place with seven points and they include Mitali Patil, V.K. Sindhu and Anjanyaa N. Sowjanyaa.
