`Women get a better deal under TDP regime'

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH MAY 21. Women welfare was accorded priority during the Telugu Desam regime and 33 per cent political reservations were earmarked for them besides ensuring political awareness among women, according to the Minister for Woman and Child Welfare, S. Saraswathi.

Moving a resolution on women welfare and employment generation at the mini-Mahanadu here on Tuesday, she alleged that women lacked political awareness and were neglected during the 35 years of Congress rule. The TDP has 24 woman MLAs as against only five or six woman legislators in Congress, she said and added that the Assembly Speakership was given to a woman, Pratibha Bharathi.

The Minister spoke about various schemes for uplifting women such as Deepam, Rajarajeswari and Rajasri schemes, Balika Samruddhi Yojana and allotment of one-third quota for women in fair-price shop allotment, besides priority in `vana samrakshana samithis' and watershed committees. She said a six-year project, ANTWA was launched to train woman farmers on post-harvesting methods.

The TDP leader, Sakunthalamma, who seconded the resolution, lamented that women who constituted 50 per cent of the population were lagging behind.

The district TNTUC president, Siva Reddy, demanded steps for the revival of Cuddapah Cooperative Sugars Limited and Proddatur Milk Foods factory, as the ryots and workers dependent on them were in distress. Accusing the Congress leaders of ruining the two factories due to mismanagement, he said they should be revived in the private sector or must be run by the Government.

The Rajya Sabha member, G. Ramaiah, said tourism development would improve the economy and said there was abundant scope for tourism development in the State and in the district. Stating that the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, was promoting tourism, he said 50 new tourism projects were on the anvil.
