PAN grievances redressal week from today

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD May 21. The Income Tax department, Hyderabad, is organising a Permanent Account Number (PAN) grievances redressal week from May 22 to 29 (except Sunday). Grievances like correction of mistakes in PAN cards, non-allotment of PAN even after filing of application, issue of duplicate cards in lieu of lost ones, would be attended to promptly during the week.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax I, G. R. Reddy, said five on-line counters had been arranged on the third floor of the Aayakar Bhavan at Basheer Bagh here for the purpose. The Chief Commissioners II and III, V. K. Baranwal and R. Venkataramaiah, respectively and the Director General, P. A. Choudary, were present.

Mr. Reddy said assessees of the Telangana and Rayalaseema regions and the districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore can avail of this opportunity. A similar week was observed in Visakhapatnam earlier for the benefit of the assessees in North Coastal districts. Two telephone help lines (3282773 and 3242672) would also be provided to help the assessees know the present status of their PAN applications.

Of the 6,60,739 applications for PAN received so far in Hyderabad, the number of PANs allotted was 6,23,627. The number of PAN cards issued stood at 5,41,928 while 35,032 applications were found to be defective. As for the entire State, of the 11,02,590 applications, 9,48,627 were given PANs and 8,77,644 issued cardsHe attributed the delay earlier, to lack of proper machinery especially for avoiding allotment of duplicate numbers and cards and partly to mistakes in the applications. The department has now overcome the problems and expeditious online allotment of PAN facility has been provided at Aayakar Bhavan.
