Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Staff Reporter
P.K. Venukuttan Nair, actor-director, leads a session on acting at a workshop on TV production organised by the The Hindu-Young World and the Academy of Film and Television Art in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.
The director recollected how most filmmakers of his generation had learnt their art. ``We, in our younger days, did not have the educational facilities that today's children have. All we had was the zeal to become artistes and filmmakers. As a child, I learnt photography through home-made pinhole cameras, candles and torches. These days, children are fortunate to learn the discipline from expert teachers and using professional gadgets.'' In a session on acting, P.K. Venukuttan Nair, actor-director, explained the difference between mime, mimicking and acting, and the need for an actor to adapt his style to the requirements of the stage and screen. He introduced the participants to theories on acting formulated by Bertolt Brecht, Stanislavski and Sanskrit dramatists. He also explained concepts such as `mental objectivity', `emotional involvement', `magical if' and `whole body action.'A session on photography was led by Satish and Santosh Babusenan of AFTA, who had been cinematographers for channels such as MTV, Channel V, Star Plus, Star Movies, Zee and Sony In all, 27 children from different schools in the State are participating in the workshop, being conducted as part of the Newspaper in Education project of The Hindu-Young World. A highlight of the programme will be the production of a short film, conceived, acted and directed by the participants.
