Rajiv was committed to secular values: Jyotiraditya

BHOPAL MAY 21. The Congress MP, Jyotiraditya Scindia, today reiterated the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi's commitment to secular values and said all countrymen should resolve to fight communal forces and build the India of his dreams.

Mr. Scindia, who was accorded a rousing reception on his maiden visit to Bhopal this afternoon, was one of the main speakers, along with the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Digvijay Singh, at a special function organised by the Rajya Sabha member, Suresh Pachouri, to commemorate Rajiv Gandhi's 11th death anniversary.

Mr. Scindia said it was Rajiv Gandhi's dream and endeavour that India should progress and emerge as a strong and front-ranking country in the comity of nations. It was his desire that the country should rely on its rich legacy and spiritual strength to move ahead on the path of economic progress. He was also committed to empowering the people in villages through the Panchayati Raj system and was determined to usher progress in the countryside.

Mr. Scindia also recalled Rajiv Gandhi's priority when it came to women and youth and said it was at his initiative that the minimum age for voting was reduced to 18 years. Mr. Digvijay Singh recalled Rajiv Gandhi's immense contribution as a visionary leader. For Rajiv Gandhi, Mr. Singh said, the nation was the foremost priority.
