Rohit and Saheli Nath win under-14 titles

By Arvind Aaron

Chennai May 22. Gogineni Rohit of Champions Chess Academy, Guntur scored a fluent penultimate round victory to win the boys' under-14 title in the 15th Ramco National under-12 and 14 boys and girls' chess championships being played here at the SBOA School, on Wednesday.

In the girls' under-14 section, Saheli Nath of West Bengal played a well-controlled game to stay in the driver's seat when Mary Ann Gomes of Goodricke National Chess Academy overstepped the time control. Saheli moved to 8.5 points, one point ahead of others, where she could be joined after the final round but arbiters declared her champion with a round to spare as her progressive tie-break score is superior to that of others.

In second place are J. Megha (Kar), N. Raghavi (TN) and M. Rajadarshini (TN) with 7.5 points.

Rohit (13), sponsored by Hero Honda, won his first national chess title today after having won four medals in international competitions. He is a ninth standard school student of Vignan High School, Guntur and started playing chess in 1996.

His father told The Hindu that the Government of Andhra Pradesh would give Rohit Rs. 30,000 cash award and a laptop computer. He had previously been runner up in two National under-12 championships.

Rohit played the Sicilian defence with the black pieces and won a vital queen bishop pawn. Thereafter, on the 38th move Akshay Raj Kore resigned while being a pawn down.

Rohit said it was imminent that white was losing a rook for bishop and decided not to continue. Rohit's quick victory in two hours took him to nine points, one clear point ahead of Deep Sen Gupta, Sriram Sarja, and Ninad Vijay Puranik who are on eight points. Since the progressive scores are always beneficial to those who take the lead, Rohit was declared winner with a round to spare.

The boys under-12 section is getting fiercer by the day with all the three overnight joint leaders scoring facile penultimate round wins. Standings thus remain unchanged for the second day running. C.R.G. Krishna, Subodh Lakhey and Vijay Keerthi will finish in that order if they tie on points on Thursday. They have 8.5 points each.

In the joint second spot with eight points and with theoretical title chances are Y. Sandheep (AP), P. Saravana Krishnan (TNGR) and S. Saikrishna (AP).

The important twist of the tournament came in the girls' under-12 section where top seed Sindhu of Tamil Nadu spoilt Ramya Krishna's undefeated run with a victory. Ramya Krishna opened up her king side pawn structure with the white pieces for an attack that backfired. Sindhu hit back through this vent and won a queen for rook.

Praneetha of Andhra Pradesh capitalised on this result by checkmating the standing sensation Mitali Patil of Maharashtra after a brilliant rook sacrifice. With the chair being too short for her, Mitali, prefers to stand or kneel on the chair for extra height to see the full board. Praneetha sailed to nine points after the win while Ramya Krishna is left in second place on 8.5 points. Under-12 girls title for one of these Andhra girls is certain. India has held sway over this section at the world championships for children.
