Another suicide attempt at Secretariat

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI May 22. A 40-year-old man today attempted suicide by consuming insecticide on the Fort St. George premises on Wednesday.

Police identified the man as Ashok Kumar of Bhaktavatsalam Colony, Vyasarpadi. He was admitted to the Government General Hospital. Doctors at the hospital said his condition was ``more or less stable'', though he was kept on a ventilator as he turned delirious after the treatment began.

He had reportedly sought a sewing machine and cash from the Chief Minister through a memorandum he submitted early last month. As the assistance did not come, he consumed insecticide at around 10-30 a.m, police said. He is said to have consumed corrosives in the past for which he underwent a colonoplasty surgery.

A woman attempted to consume insecticide mixed with a soft drink, but was prevented by security personnel and sent away, police said.
