Rescue workers searching for bodies in the debris of a building, which was razed down in an explosion at Udumalpet on Wednesday.
According to the police, the explosion, cause of which was yet to be ascertained, took place at a licenced explosive cum iron shop around 1.40 p.m. It razed down the building besides causing extensive damage to shops nearby. The police have identified the deceased as shop owner Viswanathan (55), his son Hariprasad (21) and the owner of an adjacent shop Srinivasan (27). Three cars and a number of two-wheelers were damaged. Rescue teams removed 12 injured persons of whom three including a woman were said to be serious. The injured had been admitted to hospitals in Udumalpet and Coimbatore. As a result of the explosion and rescue operations the traffic in Udumalpet town was paralysed for sometime. The rescue efforts by the police and fire services continued for several hours. The Minister for Industries and Commercial Taxes, S. M. Velusamy, the Coimbatore Corporation Mayor, T. Malaravan, and others called on the injured at the CMC hospital.
