By Our Staff Correspondent

BIJAPUR MAY 22. Members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Bijapur unit, on Wednesday staged a protest in the city condemning the attack on Bhuvaneshwari Sasanur on Monday. Medical services were hit, as doctors did not report for duty.

In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, G.M. Dhananjay, they sought protection to discharge their duty. They were deeply perturbed by the attack on one of their senior colleagues, the memorandum said, and sought steps to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

The President of the IMA unit, B.V. Halakatti, the Secretary, G.S. Malipatil, and the members of the executive committee, P.M. Ambali, R.C. Bidari, R.M. Umarji and Satish Jigajinni, were present.

The Karnataka State Medical Students' Association has also condemned the attack on Dr. Sasanur. In a statement here, the President of the association, P.S. Bhusraddy, urged police to punish the culprit. Meanwhile, Dr. Sasanur, who has been admitted to Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad, is said to be recovering.

Sources said the surgery to rejoin the severed right thumb was successful.
