Manjrekar XI in driver's seat

Mumbai May 22. Vijay Manjrekar XI looked formidable on the first day of the third and final league round match against Dattu Phadkar XI in the 16th The Sportstar Trophy Mumbai Cricket Association under-19 selection trial tournament.

On the second day it took a step further to win the title. First, it made a grand total of 542. Then it dismissed Phadkar XI for 153 and enforced the follow on, a hat trick by left arm spinner Akshay Girap putting him in the individual honours list.

To begin with Manjrekar XI captain Vinit Indulkar completed his double century. He made 236 in nearly six hours, faced 273 balls and hammered 30 fours. Though he lost Praful Waghela, after the fourth wicket stand had supplied 187 runs to the side's substantial total, he went on to bat confidently to make the second double century of this year's tournament.

The promise and potential of Indulkar has been doing the rounds in the clubs, maidans and more significantly among the city's experts for quite some time now. After applying the closure of his side's first innings twenty minutes before lunch, Indulkar chose a left arm spinner in Aditya Kulkarni and off spinner Mohammed Shoeb to start his team's bowling campaign.

The scores: Vijay Manjrekar XI 542 for 8 decl. (Vinit Indulkar 236, Praful Waghela 128, Neil Daftary 38; Kshemal Waingankar three for 84) v Dattu Phadkar XI 153 (Girish Vaswani 38, Sanchit Pande 38 not out; Akshay Girap four for 29 (hat trick) and eight for no loss.

Vijay Merchant XI 105 and 224 for nine (Sahil Kukreja 64, Sanil Rane 31, Shaunak Gupte 35; Abhijit Pandit four for 69, Varun Ponkshe three for 48) v Khandu Rangnekar XI 207 (Sangram Bagul 79, Abhijit Pandit 33, Vikrant Yellegatti four for 75).
