Stand behind Govt. BJP tells people

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MAY 22. The Bharatiya Janata Party today joined the battle cry full throated, urging the people to stand solidly behind the Government which will take steps "in its final war against terrorism.''

A meeting of office-bearers presided over by the party president, Jana Krishnamurthi, reviewed the current political situation arising out of the terrorist attack at Kaluchak in Jammu on May 14 and adopted a resolution to this effect. The time had come not only for our jawans to face the situation but also for the people to rise to the occasion it said.

Mr. Krishnamurthi said that diplomatic initiatives could continue along with other steps, but he refused to spell out what those steps should be as it was for the Government to decide the course of action.

Does the BJP want the Government to attack Pakistan -Occupied Kashmir? The answer was that it was for the Prime Minister and his advisors to decide what steps should be taken. The party would support whatever the Government were to decide.

But Mr. Krishnamurthi also let it be known that the country can no longer suffer acts of terrorism emanating from Pakistani soil. Patience has run out. He added that there was no need for the BJP to send this message to the government as the prime minister and his men were well aware of the feelings of the party and the people in general.

The party chief said that for far too long India had shown "too much patience'' but insisted that this comment was not a criticism of Government inaction in the past. India did want peace, but we cannot afford to simply suffer the terrorist attacks.
