Employers of child labour remanded

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL MAY 22. The Kurnool RDO, C. Nagarani, on Wednesday remanded to custody the employers of child labourers for 15 days. The RDO took up the trial of the case after charges were framed under the provisions of Bonded Labour Act. The employers -- R. Naganna, Laxmikanthamma, Radhakrishna Murthy and Gangamma -- were accused of chaining two children -- Bhuvaneswari and Srinivasulu -- and forcing them to work in beedi rolling units.

Earlier, the police booked them for illegal confinement. They were granted bail immediately by the court. K.R. Venugopal of the the National Human Rights Commission, who visited the place expressed his reservations over the accused being out on bail. He felt that the accused might interfere with the process of investigation if they were free. Following this, the authorities reframed the charges under the Section 21 of Bonded Labour Act and produced the accused before the Divisional Magistrate.
