Huts gutted

CHENNAI May 22. About 800 people were left homeless when their huts were destroyed in a fire at Siva Shanmugapuram in Otteri on Wednesday. There were no casualties. The incident was reported about 2 p.m. and 12 fire tenders took about an hour to control the flames. While Slum Clearance Board and Chennai Corporation sources said more than 200 huts were destroyed, the Fire Service department placed the number at 50.

Temporary shelter and food were arranged for the victims. Ministers O. Paneerselvam and D. Jayakumar, the Slum Clearance Board chairman, N. Balaganga and other officials visited the area.
