`Development of port will generate jobs'

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM MAY 22. The Cooperation Minister, M. V. Raghavan, has said the development of Vizhinjam port will generate a lot of employment opportunities and will ultimately lead to the development of Thiruvananthapuram as an industrial city.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Kerala Maritime Institute, he said the Vizhinjam port would provide the necessary impetus for the industrial development of the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta and Kanyakumari.

The construction of the institute will be over within three to four months, the Minister said.

The institute at Valiyathura will provide four-month courses with three batches in a year.

Training will also be provided in the inland water transport sector.

Port at Adimalathura

Inaugurating the construction of the cargo wharf at the Vizhinjam port this evening, Mr. Raghavan said the Government had plans to set up a port of international standards at Adimalathura, near Vizhinjam. He accused certain vested interests of trying to sabotage the port project.
