Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By V.N. Harinath
The survey has identified the beggars operating at nine different points such as hotels, mosques, churches, traffic junctions, tourist places, bus stops and railway stations. The survey, done with the help of 200 Balajyoti teachers and 30 supervisors, was carried out in the mandals of Musheerabad, Himayatnagar, Nampally, Amberpet, Golconda, Shaikpet, Asifnagar, Khairatabad, Ameerpet, Secunderabad, Trimulgherry, Marredpally, Charminar, Bahadurpura, Bandlaguda and Saidabad. According to department officials, the survey was done to enable the State Government evolve a plan of action for beggars' rehabilitation. Meanwhile, the Mayor, Teegala Krishna Reddy, who has taken up their rehabilitation as one of his foremost tasks, has declared his resolve to find a solution to the problems posed by the beggars. The Mayor tried to persuade Rani Kumidini Devi, a former Mayor and honorary secretary of Sivananda Rehabilitation Home, Kukatpally, to accommodate some beggars there. With his efforts having failed, the MCH now appears to be veering towards selecting vacant lands available at Balanagar, Borabanda and Vikarabad for locating rehabilitation homes for the beggars. A large number of beggars were rounded up and dumped on the city outskirts when two VIPs visited the city last year. This was ostensibly done to prevent the city's ugly side getting focused.
