Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Meaningless talk

Sir, — The preaching of moderation, patience and caution in your Editorial, "War is no option" (May 22), does not impress in the present surcharged conditions. Bilateral negotiations, diplomatic initiatives etc. are all phraseologies which have been rendered meaningless in the past many years. It is time to end terrorism by the use of massive force, come what may. All talk of possible devastation, catastrophe and holocaust in the event of an all-out war will crumble against the infliction of a fierce and forceful attack by India.

A. N. Ganapathy,

Chennai

Sir, __ This is with reference to your Editorial ``Rekindle political processes'' (May 21) in which you have advocated the completion of the electoral process for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, in preference to the so-called jingoistic impulses. In this connection, V.K. Krishna Menon's speech in the United Nations is worth recollecting.

``Why is that we have never heard voices in connection with the freedom of people under the suppression and tyranny of Pakistani authorities on the other side of the ceasefire line? With what voice can either the Security Council or anyone coming before it demand a plebiscite for a people on our side who exercise franchise, who have freedom of speech, who function under a hundred local bodies?'' True, war is not a meaningful option. We have fought three wars with Pakistan but the problem remains. What is needed now is a victorious war.

N.R. Sathyamurty,

Cuddalore, T.N.
