Letters to the Editor
Sir, I refer to your Editorial ``Revamping the criminal justice system'' (May 6). The delay in the administration of criminal justice is the main reason for overcrowding in prisons, which, in turn, activates the nexus among the criminals. Thus, when a prisoner comes out, he builds an empire. It is unfortunate that the prison authorities do not act as a catalyst in improving the morale of the prisoners. Criminalisation of politics and politicisation of bureaucracy results in the criminalisation of bureaucracy, leading to the failure in the administration of criminal justice. Deterrent punishments are mandatory to bring down the crime rate. There is an urgent need to train the three arms of the administration of criminal justice investigating officers, prosecutors and judges. No criminal case should be kept pending in the trial courts for a period exceeding one year. G. Venkateswaran, Chennai
