NEW DELHI, MAY 23. The Home Ministry has been able to extract a `cease hostilities' agreement from the United People's Democratic Solidarity after tough negotiations between a team of the Ministry and a delegation of the UPDS led by its general secretary, Horensing Bey. The UPDS has been pursuing a separatist agenda of "self-rule'' to be achieved through violent means and has been active in the Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills areas of Assam. According to an official statement from the Home Ministry today, the UPDS has now agreed to cease hostilities for one year and work for resolution of its problems and demands through negotiations within the framework of the Constitution. With the cessation of hostilites by the UPDS wide-ranging talks between the Government and "all parties concerned'' are expected to get underway to settle issues .
