PANAJI, MAY 23. In a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party here today, the Congress president Sonia Gandhi, said the party had trampled upon all democratic principles and was incompetent in all but doublespeak. ``The BJP and its partners like the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) are giving me lessons about morality in public life. But what about them? There is no morality in Delhi and also in Goa where the BJP was in power'', she said, addressing an election rally. In a veiled attack on the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, and his reference to Islam in his speech made at the same venue last month, Ms. Gandhi said ``those statements were changed immediately in Delhi''. ``The mask keeps falling off constantly and the people are fed up with this doublespeak'', she said. Ms. Gandhi charged the BJP with functioning in a partisan manner and for considering only religious affiliations, while working for the welfare of people. Referring to the crisis in Jammu and Kashmir, following the suicide attacks on Army camps and innocent civilians, Ms. Gandhi said the Congress had always placed the nation above party politics and thus decided to support the NDA Government in its efforts to counter subversive activities. At the same time, she warned that some unprincipled elements could take advantage of the situation on the border. UNI
