Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Crush militancy

Sir, — Our media and intellectuals view the erosion of autonomy in Kashmir as the root cause of the present unrest in the State. They argue that the appropriation of all the privileges given to the people of Kashmir by successive regimes has resulted in the erosion of faith in the Indian Government and the alienation of the Kashmiri youth. And that the Government should go back to the 1952 formula, if it is sincere in resolving the Kashmir issue.

But the fact is that the predominant Muslim populace in the Valley is carried away by Pakistan's vicious propaganda. The religious affinity of the people, and the failure of the Centre to effectively cleanse the Valley of terrorists has created fear in the minds of the people and forced them to toe the line of the militants. Strong action against the terrorists alone will help the people of the Valley come out openly and support the democratic Government and integrate them with the mainstream.

K.T. Krishnaswami,

Chennai
