Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to Dr. S. Kameswaran's letter (May 24) on ban of plastics. Greenpeace reported in 1997 that PVC was a major source of dioxin, during manufacture, recycling and disposal (byincineration), or when burnt accidentally. In 1994, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that even extraordinarily small quantities of dioxin can cause hormonal imbalance, reproductory disorders and malfunctioning of the nervous and immune system. The toxicity of plastics is therefore, not a myth. As you pointed out in your Editorial (May 9), the need of the hour is to foster consumer awareness and promote research in biodegradable plastics. Ra. Ravishankar, Illinois, U.S.
