Nisha Mohota in command

By Raghunandan Gokhale

Sangli MAY 25. International Women Master and a holder of Women Grandmaster norm — Nisha Mohota (6) of LIC, Calcutta led her opponents by a full point when she scored her sixth consecutive victory in six rounds of first Meenatai Shirgaonkar International rating chess tournament for women here today.

International Women Masters — Anupama Gokhale (BPCL, Mumbai), Swathi Ghate (LIC, Pune) and Ashwini Pacchhapurkar (Maharashtra) — are trailing Nisha with five points apiece. Ashwini, who surprised her former citymate from Sangli — Anuprita Patil (3.5) will take on Nisha in the seventh round.

Nisha faced Anupama's Benko Gambit in the fifth round and played some passive moves in the opening. "I was confused in the move order and had to waste many Rook moves,'' admitted the WGM norm-holder from Kolkata. Anupama missed a decisive pawn push in the middle game and allowed Nisha to be back into the game.

Nisha then displayed her superb form by hanging on to the extra pawn. Anupama tried to invade the White King side with her major pieces but Nisha managed to keep them at bay. Nisha was defending the position with imaginative moves but the game ended abruptly as Arbiter O.S. Shankar declared Anupama lost on time. "Nisha had overcome all of her difficulties and she had a better position when I overstepped the time limit,'' Anupama said.

Swathi Ghate was involved in an interesting game with Anuprita Patil in the fifth round. Swathi had won a pawn in the Sicilian Defence when Anuprita unleashed a dangerous looking attack by sacrificing a piece. Swathi had to recall all of her International experience to repulse the attack . Finally Anuprita ran out of pieces and resigned.

Seven-year old Rucha Pujari (3) built up a commanding position against former British under-12 girls' champion Ketaki Kulkarni (4) in Sicilian Alapin Defence. Finally Ketaki managed to turn the tables with a patient defence and met leader Nisha on the top table.

Surprisingly Nisha, Swathi and Anupama met little opposition in their sixth round encounters. Nisha had little trouble dealing with Ketaki in Caro Kann Defence while experienced R. Sai Meera (Indian Bank, Chennai) unnecessarily opened the centre against Swathi in Italian Game. Swathi finished the game in 24 moves.

Anupama's opponent and former International Jayashree Sankpal displayed a rare courage outside the board. Few hours before the game, Jayashree got the news that her husband and both the kids had met with an accident. She left for Satara — her hometown immediately. When she came to know that all of her family was out of danger, Jayashree phoned the organisers and returned late for the round. Her bravery won her many accolades though she lost her game today.
