Telco `shuts down' field office in Patna

By Our Correspondent

PATNA MAY 27. The Tata Electric Company (Telco) is reported to have shut its field office here following the unruly incidents ahead of the marriage of Rohini Acharya, second daughter of the Chief Minister, Rabri Devi, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal chief, Laloo Prasad Yadav.

While the Telco officials denied that the office had been shut down and that its staff had been recalled to Kolkata, the fact remains that the office has remained closed for the past five days. They said that the office might have remained closed for the day for various reasons; one being the staff might have been on field duty.

The Telco has, however, lodged a formal complaint with the police that five of its vehicles had been taken away and that they had not been returned to the stockyard. The complaint did not identify those responsible for it.

Cars manufactured by various companies were forcibly taken away from their showrooms in the city. While some had been returned after the marriage, others are yet to "come back". But none of these showrooms have filed complaints with the police, the exception being Telco. Showroom owners said that their sales had been hit as the customers were wary of buying the cars, fearing that they could be among those which had been used during the marriage.

Owners of furniture shops are also a distressed lot with many waiting for their furniture to be returned to them in good shape.
