Humpy, youngest woman to achieve men's GM norm

HYDERABAD MAY 27. Koneru Humpy added another feather in her cap when she became the youngest woman player to achieve the men's GM norm.

The Bank of Baroda sponsored set up a world record by achieving the men's GM norm at the age of 15 years, one month and 27 days, breaking the old record held by Judit Polgar at 15 years, four months and 27 days according to information received here on Monday.

Playing in the Elekes memorial GM chess tournament in Hungary, Koneru Humpy in her tenth round match against IGM Luckas Peter of Austria went for a quick draw into take the necessary half-point which gave her a tally of 7.5 points and the third norm as well.

Humpy opened with Queens Indian Defence and agreed for a draw after only 12 moves.

Humpy has now added another achievement to her already impressive list of feats which includes world titles in the under-10, under-12, under-14 and junior categories.
