TDP reiterates commitment to secularism

By Dasu Kesava Rao

WARANGAL MAY 27. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam leader, Chandrababu Naidu, has reiterated the party's credentials and commitment to secularism and its support to the Vajpayee Government on the basis of the NDA agenda.

It would not remain a spectator if the interests of the minorities were threatened, he asserted.

In his inaugural address to the TDP `Mahanadu' here today, Mr. Naidu condemned Pakistan-inspired acts of terrorism and said it was time all parties and organisations spoke in one voice against the enemy like the Americans did after the September 11.

He hit out at the Congress for putting obstacles in every programme and project taken up by the State Government. "They can't do anything good.

They can't give good governance. When we initiate good work, they are green with envy and try to scuttle our programmes," he said.

Decrying what he called the Congress "doublespeak" on power reforms, he ridiculed the party's "people's ballot" on power tariff hike, saying "it is nothing but cheating the people. It is Congress ballot".

The Congress saw glorious visions of power in Delhi on the basis of having Government in 14 States, but did not reckon with the fact that in 50 per cent of the country "it had no existence" such as in big States like U.P., Bihar, Bengal, and Tamil Nadu.

Coalition politics had come to stay and no single party could ever rule the country, he said.

About 5,000 delegates are attending the three-day party session in which about 40 resolutions are to be adopted, including a political resolution, a resolution on Centre-State relations and on economic and development issues.

Warangal town has been spruced up for the `mahanadu,' as the Chief Minister, his entire Cabinet and all TDP MPs and MLAs are staying here for three days to deliberate on various subjects.
