46 killed in bus accident

By Our Special Correspondent KOLKATA MAY 27. At least 46 persons were killed and 26 injured when an overcrowded bus lost control and skidded into a pond today at Bantala on the outskirts of Kolkata.

The accident occurred at around 10.10 a.m. when the bus, coming from Ghatakpur in district South 24-Parganas, fell into the pond after one of its front tyres burst.

Police said 46 bodies were recovered from the partly submerged bus and rescue operations were on.

The Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, visited the spot and said the Government would offer compensation to the affected families.
