Rs. 80-cr. plan to 'remodel' drains

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE May 27. The deaths caused by Saturday's rain might yet do a final service to Bangaloreans if the city corporation's proposal to "completely remodel'' storm-water drains gets the Government's approval.

The Mayor, K. Chandrashekar, told The Hindu on Monday that the project would cost an estimated Rs. 80 crore.

A proposal from a private company, `Suppes Consultants", had been forwarded to the Government, and approval was awaited.

Meanwhile, to prevent flooding, water was being pumped from overflowing drains, he added.

Compensation

Mr. Chandrashekar said a compensation of Rs. 50,000 would be paid to the relatives of each of those who died in the rain-related incidents.
