Venkatesh, Ganguly in lead

By Our Sports Reporter

M.R. Venkatesh, who is in joint lead with S.S. Ganguly, makes a move against Sunderarajan Kidambi in their fifth round match in the National Rapid chess championship in Bangalore on Tuesday.

BANGALORE May 28. M.R. Venkatesh and S.S. Ganguly led with five points each at the conclusion of the fifth round in the National rapid chess championship at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium here on Tuesday.

In the fifth round, Venkatesh defeated junior National champion S. Kidambi who earlier caused the day's flutter, scalping Grandmaster Abhijith Kunte.

National rapid chess remains a favourite outing with Venkatesh. The 17-year old had emerged third in the championship, last year. And in the latest edition, he wants to better his performance. "The chances are bright,'' said the Chennai lad.

In the third round he found a toe-hold in V.S. Negi's castle in the tenth move and was soon a pawn up. Venkatesh wrapped up the match soon and followed it up by trapping R.B. Ramesh's queen in the fourth round. Venkatesh used a Sicilian Pelican variation and found a breach in Ramesh's Bishop e2 to close the match.

Bolstered with victories in the morning, Venkatesh, playing white, employed a Ruy Lopez Opening against International Master Kidambi. Venkatesh thrived on Kidambi's Brayer Variation and attacked on his rival's King side. "I took a few risks and it paid off,'' said Venkatesh.

Venkatesh's partner in the top-board on Wednesday, Ganguly, also enjoyed an all-win day as he gained a pawn at V. Saravanan's expense in the fifth round. Ganguly, who defeated Sriram Jha with a Sicilian Paulson opening in the fourth round, started the day on a winning note, employing a Queens Gambit against Sudhakar Babu.

The day's surprise belonged to S. Kidambi who defeated third-seed Abhijith Kunte despite trailing in the opening and middle games. Kunte with a Queen's Gambit Decline game held an edge but with time pressure on the rise, a draw was on the cards but the third seed's blunder in the end game helped Kidambi connect his g pawns and make it a queen to win the game.

Top-seed P. Hari Krishna, after being held to a draw by N. Sanjay in the third round, recovered with wins over C.J. Aravind and Devaki Prasad.
