Sir, The President, K.R. Narayanan, has done a commendable job. However, a second term for the same person is not called for, both in principle and as a matter of convention. The new incumbent should be a man of courage and conviction and should be able to resolve crises with a fair mind and cool judgment. P.C. Alexander fits the bill admirably. His experience as head of the PMO during Indira Gandhi's regime would be invaluable.
