TDP not soft on BJP, says Chandrababu Naidu

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD May 30. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has dismissed suggestions that his party is toeing a soft line vis-a-vis the Bharatiya Janata Party.

While extending issue-based, outside support to the Vajpayee Government, he said the Telugu Desam never hesitated to do plain-speaking whenever the former strayed from the agreed agenda or did anything to jeopardise the secular values.

Talking to reporters here, he said the TDP was the first to loudly protest against `Saraswati vandanam' and the Gujarat Government's bid to allow employees to participate in RSS activities. It clearly spelt out that a Supreme Court verdict was the only solution to the Ayodhya issue, detained Ramsevaks going to Ayodhya for `shiladaan' in March and spoke out against Gujarat Government's failure to contain violence. It was again the only party to walk out from the Lok Sabha debate on Gujarat violence.

The TDP, he said, got the Vajapyee Government to drop the move for early polls in Gujarat, act tough against the perpetrators of violence in the strife-torn State by sending K.P.S. Gill as adviser to the Governor and finally announce a relief package for the State.

``There is, therefore, no question of our adopting a soft line toward the BJP or any other party'', he said. ``Our stand on change of leadership in Gujarat remains. But do we need to state this every day?'' he asked a questioner.

On the latest bombing incidents in Ahmedabad, he said to his knowledge, Mr. Gill was handling the situation well and that action was taken against RSS people also. He refused to answer questions on the choice of the next President, saying he did not want the high office to be made a subject of controversy.

He would be happy if a consensus was reached among all parties. About the party's decision on the candidate, he said ``we will announce it at the appropriate time'.

On the just-concluded party `mahanaadu' (conclave) at Warangal, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu said it was a grand success in terms of participation as well as conduct.

Several issues were addressed and 45 resolutions were adopted.

About Rs 1.23 crores was received by way of contributions from the cadre in addition to about Rs. 15 lakhs from elected representatives, including Ministers, who announced the donation of a month's salary.
