Security tightened in Acharapakkam

KANCHEEPURAM MAY 30. Security has been tightened at Acharapakkam, byelection for which is being held on Friday. Heavy police pickets have been posted at all entry points on the National Highway 4, East Coast Road and all other roads leading to the Acharapakkam constituency. Vehicles are subject to thorough security checks. About 2000 policemen will be on duty.

All the 75 sensitive places will have extra police protection. Companies of the Tamil Nadu Special Police from Manimuthar and Veerapuram have also been summoned. Varun, a water canon belonging to the Madurai city police has also been stationed at Acharapakkam in the event of any emergency. This morning, electronic voting machines and control units were taken from the Cheyyur Block Development Office to all the 163 polling stations with police security. Over 659 government staff would be on election duty, sources said.
