Flutter at temple fete

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE May 30. Tense moments prevailed for a while at the venue of a kumbabishekam here when the Sankaracharya of the Kanchi Math, Jayendra Saraswati, was ushered back to his seat without performance of rituals.

A "beep'' from an equipment of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad was reported to have caused the confusion. The acharya's abrupt return was linked to it, giving rise to a suspicion that explosives were planted near the platform where the rituals were to be performed.

However, it was clarified that the equipment would emit a sound if it discovered any metal item.

Later, talking to presspersons, the Sankaracharya expressed surprise over the confusion and said that he did not perform the kumbabishekam as the platform was too high.
